Roxana Varvara is a PhD candidate in the Department of Communication Studies at NUPSPA, currently working on her PhD thesis on the European Union regulatory framework on emerging technologies. She has her BA from NUPSPA’s College of Communication and Public Relations. She followed up with a Master’s degree in Marketing and Business Communication, while also working for the research department of a public institution. She continued to reinvest herself with a Research Master’s degree in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where she graduated from the New Media and Digital Culture track. There she redefined her research style by discovering the critical media studies approach, then the digital humanities field and tools. Therefore, her main research interests lie at an interdisciplinary crossroads – from platform studies, to surveillance capitalism, to digital memes and then all the way to investigating the discourse and dissemination of (dis)information on social media, both on mainstream and fringe platforms.
